Target Audience Research: Analysis

After conducting our focus groups we found out the following about our target audience of 16-18 year olds and their documentary viewing habits:

'Wonders of the Universe' One of the
educational documentaries watched
by our target audience.
  • They like watching documentaries about animals and events that have happened in real life.
  • They also watch documentaries that are beneficial to their education and ones they can personally relate to.
  • They like documentaries because they are interesting and you get to learn about different cultures, animals and places that they may never get to experience or see.
  • They use documentaries as a form of entertainment. One member of the focus group particularly liked the fact that they can play on your emotions and make you feel/think certain things.
  • They want to see more action and humour in documentaries as they think they are sometimes too serious. They would also like the presenter to get involved in the action.
  • The second focus group particularly thought that documentaries should discuss current taboo subjects which are close to home more often.
  • 'The Social Network' movie
    mentioned by our
    focus group
  • Many members of the focus group said they would watch a documentary on social networking. However, a few said that they wouldn't but agreed that there are certain things we could do which would make them want to watch it. They suggested we could:
  1. Conduct an experiment on FaceBook.
  2. Include a behind the scenes look at how they make social networking sites.
  3. Look at how people interact with each other.
  4. Look at dating websites.
  5. Discuss the safety of social networking sites.

After looking at the results of our target audience research, we have decided to stick with our original idea of a documentary about social networking sites. However, we will incorporate the ideas our audience has suggested to make sure it is appealing for them to watch.
