Manipulation of Images

I had a very clear idea of how I was going to manipulate the images to meet the needs of my newspaper adverts. I had to edit two of the three pictures I was going to include in my advert. To create the main image I had to remove the facial features of the model from the photo I had taken. I did this by using the retouch tool in Picasa 3.

House Style

This is the house style I will be using when creating my advert. Most of the different aspects will be the same style as the ones I used in my double page spread so my products look like they belong together.

Text size
I will use the 72pt text size for the name of my documentary and I will use the 48pt text size for the slogan of my documentary.

Draft Layouts

I created four rough layouts of how I could set out the different elements of my advert. The elements I have included are:
  • Image of persons face
  • Name of documentary
  • Slogan for documentary
  • Quote from review
  • Logo of production company
  • Logo of channel documentary is to be aired on
  • Date and time of when the documentary is to be aired

Draft Content

Text
There won’t be much written text on the advert as I want the interesting image to speak for itself. However, these are the pieces of text which I will include in my advert. Here there is:
  • the name of the documentary (in the form of a Twitter username to engage the reader)
  • the slogan of the documentary
  • the date and time of the documentary
  • a short quote from a review of the documentary

Production Schedule

This is the production schedule I will aim to stick to when creating my advert.

Mindmaps of Ideas

Here are the mindmaps and drawings I created when I was coming up with ideas for my advert.I have mindmapped the following things:
  • Content
  • Images
  • Colour scheme
  • Basic drawings of layouts

Subject Matter

As this advert is my main production, I need some information on documentary. I will need to answer the following things:
  • When will the documentary air and on what channel?
  • Who has produced and directed the documentary?

Target Audience Research: Analysis

After conducting my research I have found out the following things from my target audience.
  • All of them read newspapers to some extent so it would be appropriate for me to advertise my documentary in a newspaper.
  • The majority of the people I questioned read The Sun.
  • All of them look at the adverts featured in the newspapers they read.

Target Audience Research: Results

These are the results I gathered from the questionnaires I distributed.

Target Audience Research: Questions

Today I asked 10 16-19 year olds to find out more about their expectations of my product and what their current consumption habits of newspaper adverts are like. These are the questions I asked them:

1. Do you read newspapers?
  • Yes
  • No
  • Sometimes

Codes & Conventions

After looking at two newspaper adverts and a documentary film advert, I have identified features that must be included in my advert to make it successful.
  • Interesting and abstract images
  • Information about the product
  • Language that helps the advert achieve its purpose of appealing to the reader. For instance, descriptive language to appeal to the readers senses or persuasive language to make the buy the pro
  • Eye-catching colour scheme to grab the reader’s attention.
  • Extra information about the product e.g. contact details or where to buy the product.
  • Company logo
  • Persuasive techniques like a review of product
  • Two colours used
All of these features help the newspaper advert achieve its overall purpose, which is to advertise and promote a new product (in this case my documentary) to the public in a way which will engage their attention and interest them in the product.

Similar Products

I have deconstructed two newspaper adverts to see what the generic codes and conventions they include are. I will also be able to see what works well and what doesn't so I can make my own advert successful. The first advert is taken from The Daily Mail and advertises Portugal as a holiday destination. The second advert is taken from The Daily Star and advertises Star Bingo. I couldn't find any adverts for TV programmes in the newspapers I looked at but by looking at these adverts I should still be able to understand how adverts work.

Chosen Brief: Ancillary Task 2

For my second ancillary task I have decided to make an advert for my documentary to be featured in a newspaper. I decided to do this task as I find advertising interesting and it is something I have enjoyed in Media Studies in previous years.
