  • Did you like the documentary? If not, why?
  • Do you think the documentary appeals to a target audience of 16-19 year olds? If not, why?
  • Would you be interested in watching the rest of the documentary? If not, why?

Manipulation of Images

I had a very clear idea of how I was going to manipulate the images to meet the needs of my newspaper adverts. I had to edit two of the three pictures I was going to include in my advert. To create the main image I had to remove the facial features of the model from the photo I had taken. I did this by using the retouch tool in Picasa 3.

House Style

This is the house style I will be using when creating my advert. Most of the different aspects will be the same style as the ones I used in my double page spread so my products look like they belong together.

Text size
I will use the 72pt text size for the name of my documentary and I will use the 48pt text size for the slogan of my documentary.

Draft Layouts

I created four rough layouts of how I could set out the different elements of my advert. The elements I have included are:
  • Image of persons face
  • Name of documentary
  • Slogan for documentary
  • Quote from review
  • Logo of production company
  • Logo of channel documentary is to be aired on
  • Date and time of when the documentary is to be aired

Draft Content

Text
There won’t be much written text on the advert as I want the interesting image to speak for itself. However, these are the pieces of text which I will include in my advert. Here there is:
  • the name of the documentary (in the form of a Twitter username to engage the reader)
  • the slogan of the documentary
  • the date and time of the documentary
  • a short quote from a review of the documentary

Production Schedule

This is the production schedule I will aim to stick to when creating my advert.

Mindmaps of Ideas

Here are the mindmaps and drawings I created when I was coming up with ideas for my advert.I have mindmapped the following things:
  • Content
  • Images
  • Colour scheme
  • Basic drawings of layouts

Subject Matter

As this advert is my main production, I need some information on documentary. I will need to answer the following things:
  • When will the documentary air and on what channel?
  • Who has produced and directed the documentary?

Target Audience Research: Analysis

After conducting my research I have found out the following things from my target audience.
  • All of them read newspapers to some extent so it would be appropriate for me to advertise my documentary in a newspaper.
  • The majority of the people I questioned read The Sun.
  • All of them look at the adverts featured in the newspapers they read.

Target Audience Research: Results

These are the results I gathered from the questionnaires I distributed.

Target Audience Research: Questions

Today I asked 10 16-19 year olds to find out more about their expectations of my product and what their current consumption habits of newspaper adverts are like. These are the questions I asked them:

1. Do you read newspapers?
  • Yes
  • No
  • Sometimes

Codes & Conventions

After looking at two newspaper adverts and a documentary film advert, I have identified features that must be included in my advert to make it successful.
  • Interesting and abstract images
  • Information about the product
  • Language that helps the advert achieve its purpose of appealing to the reader. For instance, descriptive language to appeal to the readers senses or persuasive language to make the buy the pro
  • Eye-catching colour scheme to grab the reader’s attention.
  • Extra information about the product e.g. contact details or where to buy the product.
  • Company logo
  • Persuasive techniques like a review of product
  • Two colours used
All of these features help the newspaper advert achieve its overall purpose, which is to advertise and promote a new product (in this case my documentary) to the public in a way which will engage their attention and interest them in the product.

Similar Products

I have deconstructed two newspaper adverts to see what the generic codes and conventions they include are. I will also be able to see what works well and what doesn't so I can make my own advert successful. The first advert is taken from The Daily Mail and advertises Portugal as a holiday destination. The second advert is taken from The Daily Star and advertises Star Bingo. I couldn't find any adverts for TV programmes in the newspapers I looked at but by looking at these adverts I should still be able to understand how adverts work.

Chosen Brief: Ancillary Task 2

For my second ancillary task I have decided to make an advert for my documentary to be featured in a newspaper. I decided to do this task as I find advertising interesting and it is something I have enjoyed in Media Studies in previous years.

Manipulation of Images

I had a very clear idea of how I was going to manipulate the images to meet the needs of my double page spread. To make my double page spread look professional, I need to edit some of the images I intend to use. The image which I had to manipulate was:
  • the main image of the presenter
Here is the original image of the presenter.

This is the first draft of the article which will be in my double page spread.

Faceless: Who’s following you?

We chatted to Emily Keens, the presenter
of the groundbreaking new documentary ‘Faceless,’ to discuss social networking and her new documentary.

Draft Layouts

I created four rough draft layouts of how I could set out the different elements in my double page spread. The elements I have included in these diagrams are:
  • Heading
  • Lead paragraph
  • Text
  • Main image
  • Image 2
  • Captions
  • By line
  • Name of magazine
  • Page number

House Style

This is the house style I will be using when making this double page spread.

Text size
I have experimented with a range of text sizes to see which would be most appropriate for their individual tasks. Here I have experiemented with different font sizes for the heading of the double page spread. After looking at the different sizes, have I have decided that I will use size 60pt as it is large and eyecatching. I have also decided that I will use size 20pt for the lead paragraph of my double page spread as it is large enough to be easily read but not draw attention away from the title.

Mindmaps of Ideas

Here are the mindmaps and drawings I created when I was coming up with ideas for my double page spread.
I have mindmapped the following things:
  • Heading of double page spread
  • Content

Subject Matter

As my main production is the subject matter for this article I can use the same information I gathered in my planning for that to provide information for this article. However, I will need some additional information on the documentary. I will need to answer the following things:
  • When the documentary will air and on what channel?
  • Who presents the documentary?
  • Who are the special guests?
  • Who produced and directed the documentary?

Target Audience Research: Analysis

The results show the following about my target audience’s TV listings magazine consumption habits:
  • The majority of my audience read TV Choice to find out TV listings. However a lot of my target audience didn’t know what TV listings magazine they got.
  • The majority of my audience sometimes read the articles featured in the different TV listings magazines.

Target Audience Research: Results

These are the results I gathered from the questionnaires I distributed.

Target Audience Research: Questions

Today I asked 10 16-19 year olds to find out more about their expectations of my product and what their current consumption habits of double page spreads are like. These are the questions I asked them:

1. What TV listings magazine do you get?
  • The Daily Mail: Weekend TV magazine
  • TV Choice
  • Radio Times
  • TV Times
  • Other (please state________)
  • I don’t know
  • None

Codes & Conventions

After looking at two double page spreads I have identified the features that must be included in a double page spread to make it successful.

Similar Products

I have deconstructed three double page spreads to see what the generic codes and conventions they include are. I will also be able to see what works well and what doesn't so I can make my own double page spread successful. The first double page spread is taken from The Daily Mail's TV listings magazine, 'Weekend.' It goes behind the scenes of the BBC1 drama, 'Merlin.' The second double page spread is taken from 'TV Choice' and is a summary of the new 'Spooks' series. The third double page spread is from the Radio Times and is about the new Doctor Who.

Chosen Brief: Ancillary Task 1

I have decided to make a double page spread from a TV listings magazine as my first ancillary task. I have chosen this brief because I enjoy creating print media products and I like writing.

Animatic

Here is the animatic we have created for our production. We have included all of the transitions and camera movements we will use in the final product.

Audio

We will make our own voice-overs and use background music in our documentary. We have decided to use the following audio from http://beatsroyaltyfree.com in our documentary. We decided to use this piece of music as it's modern and would appeal to our young target audience.

Location Recce & Risk Assessment: Location 3

This is the location recce and risk assessment we carried out at our first location, Mr Parker's office at Manshead Upper School.

Location Recce & Risk Assessment: Location 2

This is the location recce and risk assessment we carried out at our second location, outside the entrance of Manshead Upper School.

Technical Diagrams

We have created technical diagrams to show how we are going to set up the lighting some of the more complicated shots.

Camera Composition
The diagram below shows the camera composition for one of the interview shots.

Location Recce & Risk Assessment: Location 1

This is the location recce and risk assessment we carried out at our first location, Manshead Upper School's Library.

Storyboards

For our product, we have created the following storyboards based on the first 5 minutes of our documentary. We have included a colour coded key to show which part of the description is dialogue, camera movement and sound.

Test Camera Shots

We carried out a variety of test camera shots so we could see what the final filming of the different shots will look like. It also allowed us to experiment with different compositions of the shots before filming the final version.

Equipment, Costume & Props

This is the list of equipment, costumes and props we will be using in our documentary.

2 Column Shooting Script

When researching how to make a documentary we came across a technique used by professionals, like Alan Rosenthal, called the ‘2 column shooting script.’ This can also double up as a shooting script. This allows us to plan what is going to be shown on screen and what voice-over/sound will be playing over it.

Questions for Interview

So we are prepared for our interview with Mr Parker, we have planned what questions we are going to ask him. He has also been sent a copy of these questions so he is able to plan his answers. The questions are:
  1. Have you had any issues of cyber bullying in the school?
  2. What has been the worse case of cyber bullying you have witnessed in your teaching career?
  3. What affect has it had on the students involved?

Mindmaps of Ideas

These are the mindmaps we created when we were discussing our documentary. We discussed:

  1. the name of the documentary
  2. the ordering of topics/events in the documentary
  3. the interview subjects we could use
  4. the locations needed for filming
  5. the presenter

Pitch

Our logo
The name of my group is, 'Bippa Productions.' This group consists of Jasmine Robson and myself. We will both take on a variety of roles throughout the making of this documentary. However, for some of the roles we will work together to spread the work load and make sure the project is a joint effort. The roles each member of the team will take on are explained in the table below.

Final Idea

After conducting our research, we have decided to stick to our original idea of a current affairs documentary on the topic of social networking. It will incorporate ideas from Bill Nichols 'Modes of Documentary,' as it will be a mix between the  participatory and performative modes. It will be a mix between these two modes as the presenter will engage with the subject through interviews and Twitter experiments yet highlight the social importance it has to our target audience.

We will include the dangers and security risk users’ face when using these sites. We will also cover the advantages to using such sites to make sure the documentary remains unbiased.

Friday 30 September 2011

Subject Matter

As we are making a documentary which consists of specialised subject matter; I did some research into social networking sites and their dangers. I decided I wanted to answer the following questions:

Target Audience Research: Analysis

After conducting our focus groups we found out the following about our target audience of 16-18 year olds and their documentary viewing habits:

Target Audience Research: Videos

These are the videos of our two focus groups.

Target Audience Research: Questions

Today we conducted two focus groups of eight 16-19 year olds. These teenagers were both male and female. We asked them the following questions:
  1. How old are you?
  2. Do you watch documentaries? If so, which ones? If you don't, why? What would make you watch documentaries?

Similar Products: Part 1

To make sure we applied the correct codes and conventions to our documentary we looked at five similar products and conducted a textual analysis of each one. These products include several different styles of documentary making. We looked at:
  • 'The Truth about Drugs in Football' by Dispatches for Channel 4
  • 'Small Teen Bigger World' as part of the Extraordinary Me series for BBC 3
  • 'Educating Essex' for Channel 4
  • 'Gateway to Heroin' by Vanguard for Current TV
  • 'Big Brother' for Channel 5
  • 'Hunting the Internet Bullies' by Panorama for BBC One

Industry Research

We conducted research into the documentary industry to see who is making similar products to the one we're going to make. We also identified why they may want to help us distribute our final product once we have made it.

Styles of Documentary

There are several different styles of documentaries.

'Fly on the wall'
'Fly on the wall' documentaries observe real life situations supposedly without disturbing any of the participants. The latest 'fly on the wall' documentary is called, 'Educating Essex' and follows the teachers and students of Passmore Academy.

Modes of Documentary

As defined by documentary theorist, Bill Nichols, there are said to be six modes of documentaries. They are:

Codes, Conventions & Techniques

I researched into the codes and conventions of documentaries so I know what to include in my final product. I have also looked into the techniques used in documentary making. This is especially important when looking at how camerawork and editing is used.

Codes and Conventions:
  • A voice-over. A voice-over played over the on screen images will encourage the audience to think that the narrator has superior knowledge on the subject being discussed. They can either be by the presenter of the documentary or someone else with lots of knowledge on the subject.

About Documentaries

Initial Ideas

After deciding on the brief, we briefly discussed what issue we will do our documentary on. We want to do something which we can personally relate to and something which is a current problem throughout the world. Here is the mind map we created about our initial ideas.
We have decided to look into the problems surrounding social networking further. We think this would be a good topic to consider as it will link well with the other unit we are currently doing.

Welcome to my A2 Media Studies blog!

I will be using this blog for my G324 media production portfolio. I have chosen to make a 5 minute extract from a TV documentary as I think it will challenge me more compared to the other briefs which were on offer. I also think I will find more enjoyment out of this brief as I will be trying something I haven't done before. For this project I will be working with Jasmine Robson.

I am influenced by documentaries which discuss issues within the modern world. At the end of the project I would have hoped to achieve a greater understanding of how to communicate modern issues to an audience through documentaries.
